Sugarcane Memory II (2026)
Sugarcane Memory II (2026) continues Botanica Brasilis’ exploration of cultivated plants as carriers of ecological and cultural memory. Painted from recollection rather than direct observation, the work reconstructs the remembered presence of sugarcane through atmosphere, gesture, and fragmentation. The plant emerges slowly through the linen surface, suspended within an open field of raw textile that allows space, silence, and material texture to remain active within the composition.
The scroll is defined by its restrained palette of softened greens, oxidised olive tones, muted ochres, and weathered vegetal browns. The palette evokes living cane before harvest: humid fields, layered foliage, filtered tropical light, and the dense vertical growth of cultivated landscapes. The elongated leaves curve and disperse outward with a lighter, more fragile movement, giving the composition a greater sense of air and vertical expansion. Areas of pigment appear faded or partially absorbed into the fabric, creating a surface that feels shaped by time, climate, and repetition. The elongated leaves curve outward with a delicate instability, while the vertical stems maintain a quiet structural rhythm through the centre of the composition. Together, these elements produce a work that feels both grounded and transient.
Painted entirely by hand on raw linen, the image is built through successive translucent layers of pigment absorbed directly into the textile. The weave of the linen remains visible throughout, allowing the material itself to participate in the image. Variations in pigment density, softened edges, and areas of near disappearance are intentionally preserved as part of the work’s visual language.
Presented as a suspended scroll with wooden dowel and cotton cord, the piece exists between painting, textile, and archival object. Its vertical format gives the work a calm architectural presence while retaining the softness and tactility of cloth.
