Sugarcane Memory III (2026)
Sugarcane Memory III (2026) continues Botanica Brasilis’ investigation into cultivated plants as vessels of ecological and cultural memory. Painted from recollection rather than direct observation, the work approaches sugarcane as something remembered across distance and time: fragile, recurring, and partially dissolved through memory itself.
The composition is marked by a more elongated and sparse vertical structure. Slender stalks rise through the centre of the linen surface while thinner leaves bend, dry, and fold inward with an almost calligraphic rhythm. Areas of open linen surround the plant, creating a heightened sense of stillness and spatial quiet. The image feels suspended rather than fixed, as though the sugarcane were gradually surfacing from the textile and fading back into it simultaneously.
The palette centres on oxidised ochres, earth browns, muted olive greens, and faded vegetal tones. Certain passages appear weathered or sun-dried, recalling cane fields during seasonal transition, exposure, or late harvest periods. The restrained colour and softened edges allow the work to carry a sense of erosion, duration, and atmospheric fragility.
Painted entirely by hand on raw linen, the image is built through successive translucent layers of pigment absorbed directly into the textile. The visible weave of the linen remains active throughout the composition, allowing material and image to exist together without separation. Variations in pigment density, softened contours, and areas of near disappearance form part of the work’s visual language.
Presented as a suspended scroll with wooden dowel and cotton cord, the piece exists between painting, textile, and archival fragment. Its narrow vertical format gives the work a calm architectural presence while preserving the softness and movement of cloth.
