Sugarcane Memory I is part of the sugarcane linen scroll series by Botanica Brasilis, a contemporary textile painting practice examining cultivated plants as vessels of ecological and cultural memory. Working from recollection rather than direct observation, Brazilian-born artist Cleidi Hearn reconstructs remembered agricultural landscapes from Brazil while living in Ireland. The plant appears here as something partially preserved through distance and time: unstable, atmospheric, and quietly persistent.
Painted on raw linen through successive translucent layers of pigment, the work allows the image to emerge gradually from the textile surface. Golden ochres, softened greens, oxidised yellows, and faded vegetal tones evoke the changing conditions of sugarcane fields during periods of harvest, dryness, and late light. The composition moves between presence and erosion, carrying the slow rhythms of cultivation and memory within the material structure of the painting itself.
